Event Postponed. New date to be determined. Danbury Symphony Orchestra Student Concerto Competition, March 21st

Selected finalists will compete on Saturday, March 21 at 2 pm at the Danbury Music Centre

Prize: A solo performance with the Danbury Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, May 9, 2020. The winner will perform one movement of a standard concerto (or vocal selection) with the orchestra.

Eligibility: Any student not available to perform on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 7:00 pm, may not compete.
Open to student musicians no older than seniors in high school in the 2019-2020 school year, who play orchestral instruments, piano, or sing. Previous first place winners are not eligible.

Application Process: Application must be postmarked by February 10, 2020
Early application is encouraged. Send the following in one envelope to:

• Completed application form.
• $45 application fee (non-refundable) checks payable to Danbury Music Centre.
• A CD, DVD, or Flash drive representing the applicant’s highest skill level.
While there are NO repertoire requirements for the application recording, the concerto or song that an applicant will perform at the finalists’ competition must be pre-approved.
• A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s teacher (either private or school).

Procedure:
1. The Audition Committee will screen all applications.
• Up to 10 finalists will be invited to perform for the panel of judges and the public at
the Concert of Finalists, Saturday, March 21 at 2:00pm at the Danbury Music Centre.
• At this concert, finalists will perform the same repertory they hope to perform with the orchestra. All finalists must provide their own piano accompanists.
• Depending upon time constraints, a finalist may be limited to 10 minutes.
5. The winner of the competition will be announced at the conclusion of the
“Concert of Finalists”. The judges’ decision is final.
6. The winner will rehearse with the Danbury Symphony Orchestra on dates to be
mutually determined, and perform on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 7:00 pm

Repertory:
Instrumentalists:
• Applicants – a recording of any piece(s) showing highest level of ability
• Finalists – the same piece that will be performed with the orchestra
This piece must be from the standard concerto literature and needs pre-approval from the Danbury Music Centre.
Vocalists: All vocalists must contact the Danbury Music Centre prior to applying.
• Applicants – a recording of up to three contrasting arias or songs from the standard repertoire
• Finalists – the same piece that will be performed with the orchestra
This piece must be from the standard concerto literature and needs pre-approval from the
Danbury Music Centre.

Memorization: Encouraged but not required
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications and all material in the applications become the property of the Danbury Music Centre.
