Dido and Aeneas is a short opera by Henry Purcell about Aeneas’ stop on an island during his odyssey. Dido is the widowed Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas the handsome sailor. They meet and fall in love. Then a sorceress and some witches devise a way to break the lovers up (the gods wanting Aeneas to continue on his journey). Finally, Aeneas decides he has to leave, and after Dido watches him leave, she kills herself by throwing herself in a fire. A typical opera plot!
