Carnival of the Animals

Featuring Pianist Joy Xu, the winner of our annual Student Concerto Competition 


Joy Xu is thirteen years old and is an eighth-grade student at Hopkins School in New Haven, CT.  Joy began her piano study at the age of four under Ms. Kumiko Imamura at the Suzuki Music Schools of Westport and Orange in Westport, CT and has been under the tutelage of Ms. Yoshie Akimoto, Steinway Artist, since 2017.  As an accomplished young pianist, Joy has won numerous local and regional piano competitions and performed at various prestigious venues in the United States. Her major musical achievements include winning the 2019 Danbury Symphony Concerto Competition, being selected to have a master class with Professor Nelita True, being invited to perform for the Music for Youth benefit concert, and performing at Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall and Stern Auditorium), Steinway Gallery, and Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, CO. In addition to piano, she has played the cello as a second instrument since the age of nine. She served as the principal cellist in the Bedford Middle School’s audition-only chamber music orchestra. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring STEM topics, is involved in Science Bowl at Hopkins School, and plays volleyball.
