Charles Ives Concert Series

Paul Frucht, Artistic Director

Jonathan Cziner, Associate Artistic Director

The primary purpose of the Ives Series is to bring American music to a community that is home to one of America’s most famous composers. The Ives Series regularly features dynamic and unique emerging artists performing Charles Ives, the music of 20th and 21st-century American composers, and music that transcends the traditional boundaries of classical music to incorporate other styles of music.

The Charles Ives Concert Series is a grant recipient of the Juilliard Project Grant and we also thank Hotel Zero Degrees Danbury, Maron Hotel and Suites and Connecticut Family Orthopedics and Orthoprompt for their generous support.

October 21st at 3:00 pm – An Ives Day Celebration: Beach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Ives

Featuring Violinist Chelsea Starbuck Smith, Cellist Mitch Lyon, and Pianist Mika Sasaki

Join us for the first-ever Ives Series celebration of Charles Ives Day, an annual local celebration of Ives’s birthday. This year – his 144th – is the first year the Ives Series has celebrated this day, which is of great importance to the Series, the DMC, our community, and to classical music. While most Ives Series concerts reflect Ives’s legacy, the American music that came as a result of his innovation, this concert flips the narrative and contextualizes Ives with those that influenced him. He cites Brahms and Beethoven, the latter of whom he quoted, as two of his greatest influences while Amy Beach was a pioneering American woman whose music is iconic the important, but often forgotten generation American of American composers the preceded Ives. The program features selections from Beethoven’s Bagetelles for solo piano, Beach’s Romance for violin and piano, the famous Brahms C Minor Piano Trio, Ives’s Largo, arranged for piano trio, and a selection from his groundbreaking piano trio.
